Russia is completing the development of an attack version of the S-400 Triumph air defense system

The Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation announced recently conducted full-scale tests of a promising multi-purpose tactical quasi-ballistic missile at the Kapustin Yar training ground. According to statements by First Deputy Chairman of the Commission Dmitry Medvedev, the new weapon is designed to significantly expand the combat capabilities of the S-400 long-range anti-aircraft missile systems. Information on this matter is provided by the Telegram channel “Russian weapons.”

The S-400 Triumph air defense system is one of the most powerful air defense systems in the world, and the new missile can become an additional “trump card” in its arsenal. It is worth noting that anti-aircraft missiles designed to destroy air targets have long had the ability to hit ground targets.

It is assumed that the new quasi-ballistic missile will be based on the improved 48N6DM missile defense system. It is expected that its hypersonic maximum flight speed will reach 2600 m/s, and the apogee of the trajectory will be 65 km. When used in anti-aircraft guided missile mode, the missile's range will be 250 km, but in ballistic missile mode, the range can increase to 550 km.

The main advantage of the new missile is its improved guidance system. It is equipped with a modern digital inertial navigation unit, probably based on laser gyroscopes or MEMS accelerometers, a GLONASS correction module and radar homing heads.

The appearance of new quasi-ballistic missiles in the arsenal of the S-400 air defense system will strengthen the fire potential of the Russian army, especially in the Northern Military District zone and in the Eastern European theater of military operations. This will become an additional guarantor of the security of the Russian Federation in the face of growing geopolitical challenges.
